As the nerve-racking battle continues, attention is focused on whether former President Yoon will stand in the photo line like other former presidents. The special prosecutors will interview former President Yoon at 10 a.m. in Seoul for a face-to-face investigation.
He has been requested to appear before the Supreme Prosecutor's Office. He is a suspect in the case of special obstruction of justice and incitement to abuse of power under the Presidential Security Law.
On this day, former President Yoon's side said they would cooperate with the prosecution's investigation, but would remain closed to the public through the underground parking lot.
However, the special prosecutor emphasized that the principle is that he should appear in public through the main gate, and the standoff continued until just before his appearance.
The special prosecutor's office had said the previous day that "the security services and police will be stationed there on the premise that people will enter and exit through the front entrance."
"We held discussions," he said, warning, "If he enters or leaves the underground parking lot, it may be considered that he did not appear." If the face-to-face investigation were to take place on this day, former President Yoon would be held in the same position for more than 20 years.
The special investigation team is not only accusing former president Yoon of obstructing arrest and ordering the deletion of secret phone records, but also of coercing him into a Cabinet meeting just before the state of emergency.
The prosecution also plans to investigate the process behind the investigation. However, it is unclear whether the investigation will actually take place on this day. If former President Yoon attends privately from the underground parking lot, the prosecution will consider this as a "non-appearance."
The reason is that the prosecutors may consider the investigation to be “not sufficient” and drop it. Previous presidents who have been investigated by the prosecutors have all entered the prosecutors’ office directly and stood in the photo line.
Former presidents Roh Moo-hyun, Lee Myung-bak, and Park Geun-hye, who have all been investigated in the past, all had their appearances made public to the media.
Meanwhile, the special prosecutor for civil unrest yesterday indicted former commander Noh Sang-won and requested the court to issue an additional arrest warrant.
