<Interview> Netflix's ”Squid Game Season 3” Director Hwang Dong-hyuk talks about the meaning of Hot Topic's ending and the production of a spin-off
*This article contains spoilers. Netflix original series "Squid Game" director Hwang Dong-hyuk talks about the ending of season 3
"I was thinking of an ending where Song Ki-hoon (played by Lee Jung-jae) somehow survives, finishes the game, and goes to America."
During an interview at a cafe in Seoul on the morning of the 30th, director Hwang said, "I vaguely thought about a happy ending.
"When I started writing, my thoughts changed," he said. "When I thought about what story I wanted to tell through my work, and what I wanted to tell through Ki Hoon, I realized that living is getting harder.
I thought to myself. Inequality is intensifying due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the risk of war is growing, and nationalism is on the rise. What can we pass on to future generations?
Director Hwang said, "Younger generations are losing their dreams, but I think it's important for the generation that has growth and development to stop being selfish and to give up what they have and sacrifice whatever it takes."
I thought that I had to give up something, and so I thought that I had to have a baby as a symbol of the future generation.
"I thought it was better than a vague happy ending where the child lives a vague life," he said. However, there was no mention of how the child was born and grew up in the game center, which left some viewers feeling unsatisfied.
Director Hwang said, "I thought about whether I should bottle-feed him, but I thought the child is a symbol. Rather than dealing with how to realistically and diligently raise a child, I wanted to focus on the symbol that Ki-hoon wants to protect."
"I thought it was best to think of it as a series and not include specifics. I wondered how much he should drink, and then I came across the symbolic scene of him feeding him with a bottle," he explained.
In particular, the "Squid Game" series has drawn a variety of opinions on the maternal and paternal love it deals with. In particular, the story of Joon Hee (played by Jo Yu Ri) and her newborn baby,
Opinions were also divided on Geumja (played by Kang Ae Sim) putting a hairpin on her son Yong Sik (played by Yang Dong Geun). Director Hwang said, "I think most people thought it was a mother's sacrifice for her son.
Rather than killing his son, how could he watch his son sacrifice Juni and his child to survive?
"I thought I was stopping my son from committing a murder," he continued, "I thought I was stabbing him in the right shoulder to stop his hand holding the knife."
Although they don't have children, all the older generations consider themselves the parents of the future generation. However, people in their teens and twenties say they feel no hope.
They don't think they can live a stable life or live a wealthier life than their parents' generation. This is not just a problem in Korea, but is spreading all over the world. From the perspective of the parents' generation, I think it's important to think of the children's generation as more stable and wealthier.
"If we continue to enjoy it, the next generation will only fall into further despair. From that perspective, I think it is important to remember the sacrifices of the older generation.
"I want people to watch the show with the feeling that it requires effort and determination," he said. Speculation also continued that a spin-off of "Squid Game" would be made. Director Hwang said, "This season,
There is no reason to continue the series, and I want to do a work with a different tone. There is a gap between season 1 and season 2 between 2021 and 2024, but if you watch the TV series, you will see Captain Park (played by Oh Dal Su) at his house.
While searching, I found some photos with the face man (played by Gong Yoo) and some with the frontman (played by Lee Byung Hun). When and how were these photos taken?
What kind of relationship is that? I wondered if it would be a good idea to talk about the past three years, regardless of the message."
He continued, "I think it's interesting, but I don't have any concrete ideas, and I'm not going to tell you when I'll do it.
After the ending of season 3 was revealed, online rumors circulated that Ki-hoon's daughter Ga-young was wearing her father's uniform and participating in the game.
There were also speculations that the baby who became number 222 would participate in the game to get revenge after he grows up.
"I think they'll bring in robots, but that's not the kind of story we're talking about," he said. Director Hwang revealed that he lost six teeth while making season 1, and recently said that he's still missing teeth.
She said she had two teeth removed, explaining, "I had them removed six months ago, but I don't have implants yet. If I'm not feeling well, I have problems with my gums."
He also revealed his plans for the future. Director Hwang said, "Just empty your mind and think about it.
I think that after about a month, I will be able to calmly take a break and reflect on the reactions to my work. After that, I will be able to think about what to make and how to make it.
"Squid Game Season 3" is about Ki-hoon, who lost his best friend in the game he rejoined with his own purpose, and Squid, who sneaks into the game while hiding his identity.
The story depicts the final fate of the participants who survived the brutal game and the front man who entered the game. Season 1, released in September 2021, was a huge hit worldwide, and Season 2
Season 1 was the most-watched series of Netflix ever, a record that remains unbroken to this day.
Following the success of season 1, season 2 also became number one in the world immediately after its release.
According to Flick Patrol, an OTT (online video service) ranking aggregation site, "Squid Game"
"Season 3" ranked first in 93 countries as of the 29th.
