In an interview with Herald POP held at a cafe in Seogyeok-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, director Hwang Dong-hyuk said,
The Netflix series "Squid Game" ended with season 3, but people are divided on the ending.
The director confessed that he fully understood that. "When I did season 2, I vaguely thought of a happy ending. I had the idea of Song Ki-hoon jumping back into the game and destroying it or something," he said.
"I thought about a story where he survives with a few others and goes to America to see his daughter," he recalled. "I started writing this work seriously, but in the end, I wondered what I wanted to convey through it.
I started to think about what I was doing and I realized that Ki-hoon's journey had to end here. After all, this work is about the world, and when I look at the world, I make season 1.
Economic inequality is worse, wars seem to be spreading with no end in sight, the climate crisis is getting worse every year, and people have neither the ability nor the will to fix it.
"If things continue like this, the world will become even darker, so I thought I had to tell that story," he said.
"I wanted to finish this story. I thought ending it with Ki-hoon sacrificing himself with this feeling was the right ending for both 'Squid Game' and the life of the man called Ki-hoon," he emphasized.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk also said, "Season 2 and 3 are inseparable because they are one and the same story. Season 1 was something that stood out, and some people were enthusiastic about the game and others about the social message.
However, it seems that expectations were different for seasons 2 and 3. Some people may be expecting what they want, but others may be disappointed. Season 3 in particular is the most exciting one, as all the conclusions are made.
"It seems like there are serious differences of opinion and arguments. I think it's inevitable, and I think those who are disappointed with the work have their reasons and the right to be disappointed," he said.
