President Lee also announced a "two-track initiative" to minimize conflicts between the two countries. On the 30th day since his inauguration, he held a press conference and answered questions from the Japanese media about Japan-Korea relations.
He responded, "My view is to separate the two (historical issues and cooperation issues)," and "I fully agree with setting up Korea-Japan relations in the same way as the Kim Dae-jung-Obuchi Declaration."
The Obuchi-Kim Dae-jung Declaration was announced by President Kim Dae-jung and Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi during their visit to Japan in 1998, and is a declaration of "a new Japan-Korea partnership for the 21st century."
The Joint Declaration of the Korean War, which was signed in 1999, was a document in which Japan expressed its remorse and apology for its past colonial rule, and the two countries committed to developing a future-oriented relationship.
President Lee said, "I had planned to visit Japan soon, but the date has not been finalized. I was the first to speak about the restoration of shuttle diplomacy, but
"Because we are a country, we would like to be able to travel back and forth when necessary without going through complicated processes, reduce misunderstandings, and cooperate on issues that require cooperation through dialogue," he said.
He continued, "I don't think there is any need to mix the two (historical issues and cooperation issues)," and emphasized, "We should have a flexible and rational attitude."
