On the 8th (local time), Italian news agency ANSA and other foreign media reported that a man was sucked into the engine of a passenger plane preparing to take off at Bergamo International Airport that morning.
The shocking incident began at around 10 a.m. when a man slipped through security at the airport and entered the runway without permission.
The man, identified as Italian former member Andrea Russo (35), entered the runway and then shook off airport security who tried to stop him.
The man ran towards the plane, which was on a taxiway preparing to take off and had its engines running. Airport operator SACBO said: "The man was neither a passenger nor an airport employee.
"The engine was running and he was sucked into it and died," he said. Witnesses said he first fell on the crankcase, a protective device for the right-hand engine.
He then ran around avoiding security guards before throwing himself into the left engine of the plane as it was preparing to take off. Local police believe the man committed suicide and are unsure how he did it.
The investigation is ongoing as to whether the plane breached security and entered the runway. According to reports, the plane in question was an Airbus belonging to the Spanish airline Volotea, with 11 people on board.
All 154 passengers and six crew members were safe, but they were reportedly traumatized. However, there have been similar incidents in the past where people have been sucked into an aircraft engine and died.
There have been three confirmed cases of people committing suicide by this method around the world in recent years. Last year, two suicides occurred at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands and Salt Lake City International Airport in the United States.
Two men are found dead in the same manner at the port.
