At a press conference on the homemade gun case held at Incheon Yeonsu Police Station on the 21st, police revealed that the motive for the crime by suspect Cho (63) was "family discord."
According to the Dong-A Ilbo, Cho told police, "He would always blame me for my divorce and push all the responsibility onto me. We would always argue.
The police received a report from a woman saying that her father-in-law had shot her husband at around 9:30 p.m. on the 20th.
Cho was holding a birthday party for his son A, who is in his 30s, at the home of his son A on the top floor (33rd floor) of an apartment building in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon.
While he was there, he went outside once and returned with a homemade gun, then immediately fired two shots at his son. Mr. A was taken to the hospital, but died.
Cho, who fled the scene in a car immediately after the crime, was arrested in Seocho-gu, Seoul about three hours later.
The day of the crime was Cho's birthday, and his son, Mr. A, is said to have held a party, with his wife, two grandchildren, and acquaintances in attendance.
Cho confessed to having placed explosives at his home in Dobong-gu, Seoul.
Police and firefighters immediately responded to the scene, evacuating about 60 residents, and discovered and removed a homemade explosive device set to explode at noon from Cho's house.
When the police asked Cho why he set it to noon, he gave the unexpected answer, "Because I thought that would be the time when there would be the fewest people around."
In addition to charges of murder, police have also charged Cho with attempted arson.
The two homemade guns used in the crime, as well as additional gun barrels, were found in the passenger seat and trunk of Cho's car.
Eleven guns and live ammunition were found, along with five to six metal pipes, at his home. Police said, "Suspect Cho confessed that he had purchased live ammunition about 20 years ago with the intention of committing suicide and stored it in a warehouse."
He continued, "The suspect said he didn't remember the exact number of bullets he purchased at the time, and there were 86 shotgun shells left after the crime."
He confessed that he saw a post from someone selling his excess items, contacted them and bought them," the police said. At the time of the crime, Cho allegedly shot two bullets at his son, A, and the remaining bullet at the interior door.
The police plan to carry out an autopsy on Mr. A and bring in a profiler to analyze the detailed motive for the crime.
