Incheon City maintains No. 1 position in the nation for birth rate increase rate (South Korea)
The Incheon region maintained its No. 1 position in the nation in May, as the birth rate continued to rise from the previous month. According to population trends announced by the Korea National Statistical Office on the 24th, the number of births in the region increased by 1.5% from January of this year.
The number of births in Incheon City as of May totaled 6,868, up 1,278 from the same period last year, a growth rate of 12.3%. This figure far exceeded the national average of 6.9%.
Chungcheongbuk-do (11.4%) and Daegu (10.9%) recorded high figures. Incheon city's birth rate has been on the rise since May last year, and has recorded a double-digit increase since October.
The number of marriages from January to May was 5,657, up 2.3% from the same period last year, and both marriages and births are showing an upward trend.
Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok said, "Incheon is working towards becoming a city where it is easy to raise children.
"The policies we have implemented have led to meaningful results in an increase in the birth rate."
