President Lee met with former Prime Minister Suga at the presidential office in Seoul that afternoon and said, "I am fortunate that exchanges between the Korean and Japanese people are increasing and that mutual respect and goodwill are also growing."
President Lee also said, "We are like neighbors who share the same garden," and added, "If not only the relationship between the two governments but also the exchanges between lawmakers become more active, it will be of great help to the development of Korea-Japan relations."
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Suga said, "I fully sympathize with what the president said," and "As the chairman of the parliamentary group, I will do my best to ensure that Japan and South Korea can walk together on a safer and more secure path."
"We will cooperate," he said, adding, "We offer our deepest condolences for the loss of precious lives caused by the heavy rain damage in South Korea."
