Foreign worker tied to forklift: Why South Korea wants leniency for perpetrator
A foreign worker in his 30s who was the victim of a human rights violation when he was tied to cargo and transported by forklift has made it clear that he does not want the perpetrators to be punished.
According to the Gwangju Cheongnam Migrant Workers Network and the Jeollanam Labor Rights Center on the 31st, a Sri Lankan national, Mr. A (31), was arrested at around 2 p.m. on the 29th in the Jeonnam area.
I met with the legal representative of the forklift driver in Namnaju and reached an agreement regarding the payment of compensation for the damage. This negotiation was conducted through the legal representative, and the victim did not officially request punishment.
"I don't want to be subjected to any more pain because of this incident," he said, adding that the process of responding to the police and Labor Party investigations was psychologically stressful.
It was reported that the decision was made because A did not want to face the perpetrator and was burdened with the burden. Son Sang Yeon, chairman of the Migrant Workers Network, said, "Mr. A does not want the perpetrator to be punished.
"Just because it's a crime doesn't mean it's acceptable," he explained. In February of this year, while at work, A was tied to a brick with plastic wrap and carried by a forklift for about 30 minutes, a brutal act.
During police investigation, the forklift driver reportedly stated, "I told my colleague to teach him how to do his job properly, but Mr. A just laughed."
This incident became widely known at the end of this month when Mr. A made it public with the help of a former member of the labor union in Sri Lanka.
A's sister and fiance were saddened by the 58-second video showing the brutality. When the incident was reported in the media, President Lee Jae-myung declared, "It is unacceptable."
The Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) has launched a comprehensive investigation into the workplace where the incident occurred, calling it "violence and a clear violation of human rights."
Meanwhile, Mr. A plans to continue working in South Korea, but the labor union said he has suffered a major psychological shock from the incident.
