Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo: ”If we had not impeached former acting president Han Deok-soo, we could have lowered tariffs than Japan” = South Korea
Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo, who has announced his candidacy for the head of the opposition People's Party, said of the recent US-South Korea tariff negotiations, "If the former acting president Han Deok-soo had not been impeached,
On the 31st of last month, Rep. Ahn appeared on Channel A's YouTube radio and called the conclusion of the US-Korea tariff negotiations "a disappointing negotiation."
Yasu said, "Our country's economy is not even half the size of Japan's. I think it would be right for us to provide about half of Japan's investment funds (in the US), but doing the same as Japan is not the right thing to do."
"We were pressed for time and followed Japan's lead," he said. "Our economy is small, but we pay a lot of defense contributions and purchase a lot of the latest U.S. weapons systems, but this is not being taken into consideration."
He also pointed out that if the acting president had started negotiations with the US earlier, tariffs could have been lowered than Japan's.
"At that time, the ruling and opposition parties should have immediately started tariff negotiations," he said. "I believe that if we had discussed it for a long time and thoroughly, we could have lowered tariffs by even a few percent compared to Japan."
"But the Democratic Party quickly impeached him," he said. "That's exactly where the reason why our country is almost last in the world began," he added, adding, "The Democratic Party, which is currently the ruling party, bears a great deal of responsibility."
Prior to this, the US and South Korea had agreed in Washington, D.C. to reduce mutual tariffs and item tariffs on automobiles from 25% to 15%, respectively, and South Korea had agreed to suspend imports of $350 billion (approximately 51% of the US exports).
The two sides agreed on a negotiation plan that includes an investment of $100 billion (approximately 15.749 trillion yen) in LNG from the United States.
The announcement included a statement that no additional openings would be made for items such as beef.
