Record heatwaves cause 2.2 times more heatstroke cases than last year in South Korea
Record-breaking heatwaves in South Korea have seen more than 3,100 people visit emergency rooms this year with heatstroke.
According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the 3rd, 516 new cases were reported nationwide on the previous day (2nd).
A total of 87 heatstroke patients visited emergency rooms in the city, with one death reported in Paju, Gyeonggi Province.
This has been going on since May 15th when the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched a monitoring system for heatstroke emergency rooms.
The cumulative number of heatstroke patients up to now is 3,143, with 19 deaths. Since the monitoring system was launched on May 20th last year, if we apply the cumulative number of heatstroke patients this year from May 20th onwards,
The total number of cases is 3,127, which is about 2.2 times higher than last year's 1,409, and the number of deaths this year is 19, which is 1.7 times higher than the 11 deaths during the same period last year.
It was also shown that most cases occurred outdoors, with 31.7% occurring in outdoor workplaces, 12.6% in the streets, and 11.5% in fields.
