The film will be released nationwide from August 8th (Friday) at Shinjuku Piccadilly and other theaters. Jin Young, who has appeared in Hot Topic productions such as "Moonlight Drawn by Clouds" and "Police Lesson," and the world-famous girl group
The film stars Dahyun from the group TWICE and is a bittersweet nostalgic love story. Ahead of its release in August, we had a private interview with lead actress Jin Young.
Q. The filming for the movie took place about a year ago and was released in Korea in February of this year. It will be released in Japan six months later. Is this a work that Jin Young has always been passionate about?
Jin Young: It's a work that brings back memories of my school days, and it feels like I've experienced my school days twice.
It will remain in my heart as a fond memory. Q. Did you do anything to prepare for the role of Jin Woo?
Jin Young: Rather than trying to create a character, I wanted to recall my memories of my school days and think about what I was like back then.
I approached the shoot thinking about what I was thinking. I focused on showing the thoughts and emotions I had as a student.
Q. This movie is about growing up from a high school student to a college student and then to an adult. How do you portray the changes in Jin Woo's state of mind as he grows older?
Jin Young: Fortunately, I am the same age as you, so I remembered those days and wondered what I was doing at the time.
Rather than observing someone and trying to get closer to the character, I tried to organize and summarise the emotions and thoughts inside me and express them in my own unique style.
Q. After playing the role of Jin Woo, were there any parts of him that you felt were similar to you? Also, if Jin Woo had been in the same class, do you think you would have become close friends with him?
Jin Young: When I'm with my friends, I like to take the lead and joke around, which is similar to me.
I thought so. Also, I think his personality of being able to accept things positively even when bad things happen is similar to my style. So, if JIN WOO was in the same class, I think we would get along well.
And we have similar values in life, so I think we would have become best friends. Q. If Jin Young were Jin Woo's friend, what would you like to say to him?
Jin Young: If we were friends, I think I would have strongly supported her. I would have always encouraged her, saying, "If you really like her, you should be brave and confess your feelings."
Q. This was TWICE's Dahyun's first time acting, so did Jin Young give her any advice about acting?
Jin Young: I didn't give any advice. He was someone who prepared a lot and worked hard, so I ended up learning a lot from him.
As his co-starring partner, I was deeply moved by his thorough preparations, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to him once again.
Q. You have worked with many actors in various productions.
What did you think of Dahyun's acting? Jin Young: He was very nervous before filming an important scene, but I was surprised that he didn't seem nervous at all once the camera started rolling.
After the shooting of the scene where she was sobbing, the emotions welling up inside her couldn't be contained and she cried for a long time. Seeing her like that, I felt that she was really immersed in this scene, and it was amazing.
Q. I heard that the theme song for the movie, "You Are the Apple of My Eye," was written and composed by Jin Young and Dahyun.
What kind of discussions did you have, and what thoughts did you put into creating it? Jin Young: Originally, I was planning to write the theme song for the movie, but Dahyun also happened to be interested in composing.
I was very happy that he said he wanted to try it. The emotions of the main character are best understood by the actors, so I thought it would be best for us, the actors, to create them.
We worked hard on the production, discussing thoroughly what emotions would fit this scene. Q. At what age do you think you were in your youth?
Jin Young: I was 17 years old, a first-year high school student. Q. Is that because you had a lot of experience studying acting?
Jin Young: It's about acting, but also about the memories I have with my friends since I first became a high school student.
I made a lot of things and met a lot of different people. It was a time when I really absorbed a lot of things.
Q. What is your most recommended scene in this movie?
Jin Young: It's the scene where Jin Woo and Sun Ah run out into the rain to play in the water. I think that scene was a pure scene that really expressed pure hearts.
I remember that we were able to let go of all our worries and just enjoy playing together.
