Ahn Cheol-soo, the People's Power Party's representative candidate, said, ”I regret the light punishment given to Jeong Han-gil.” Cho Kyung-tae, the candidate, said, ”I will hold the Ethics Committee responsible.” (South Korea)
On the 14th, the candidates for the People's Power Party expressed conflicting opinions regarding the light disciplinary action taken by the party's Central Ethics Committee against YouTuber Jung Han-gil, who caused controversy over so-called "incitement to heckling."
Ahn Cheol-soo, the party's chairman, announced that he would be attending a meeting in the capital area, Gangwon-do, and other areas at the party headquarters in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of the same day.
Immediately after the Jeju joint speech rally, he told reporters about the Central Ethics Committee's warning against Chung, "My request was to leave the party. I deeply regret this decision."
Ahn also responded to the question, "If you become the leader, will you plan to discipline Chung again?" by saying, "I probably won't keep quiet."
If something like that happens, it is right to convene the ethics committee again and have it reviewed anew,” said candidate Cho Kyung-tae.
He took a strong stance, saying, "We will thoroughly investigate the chairman and the ethics committee and hold them accountable through a party audit to determine why the warning was issued."
"The fact that the severity of the punishment handed down to those who disrupt the campaign rally in full view of the entire nation is limited to a warning shows that the members of the Ethics Committee are on the same side," he said.
Candidate Cho said, "This means that our party is no good. It clearly shows the limitations of our party." Candidate Cho said, "If I become the party leader, I will take disciplinary action.
When asked, "What did you do?" he replied, "Immediately, all at once." He added, "I told the leadership to quickly take criminal charges, but there was no response."
Meanwhile, candidate Kim Moon-soo said, "I will respect the decision of the Ethics Committee."
"It's not a matter for me to judge, but depending on the angle you look at it, the view can be quite different. I have no idea who the chairman is, but I'm sure there must be a basis for the ethics committee's decision," he said, being cautious.
Candidate Jang Dong-hyuk also said, "The Ethics Committee is an organization that makes decisions independently of the party. It is not appropriate to express an opinion on that decision here, and it will be a separate matter of discussion during the party convention."
"I don't think it's appropriate for me as a candidate to reveal that because it would be a flashpoint," he said.
