"Korea will never forget this history," he emphasized. President Lee delivered a special message to Koreans living in Japan that day, separate from his Liberation Day speech.
President Lee said, "It was thanks to the dedication of our Korean compatriots in Japan that we were able to regain the light that was stolen from us 80 years ago," and added, "Our Korean compatriots in Japan endured unspeakable hardships in the harsh labor environments."
"Despite experiencing great pain and suffering the cruel devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they always extended a helping hand to their homeland," he said. "Thanks to the sacrifices and dedication of our compatriots in Japan, these 80 years have been filled with gratitude."
"Korea has achieved remarkable success over the past year," he said. President Lee also sent a special message to all Koreans living overseas.
President Lee said, "Korean residents have also made great strides, demonstrating the strength of their nation in a variety of fields, including the economy, society, academia, the arts and sports."
He continued, "I will encourage the next generation of Koreans to maintain their pride and identity as Koreans and grow into outstanding talents."
