Blue Oval SK, a joint venture between battery giant SK On and US automaker Ford to manufacture batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), has announced that its first Kentucky plant in the US will cease production.
The plant will have an annual production capacity of 37 gigawatt hours and will produce batteries for Ford's F-150 Lightning pickup truck and E-Transit van.
The company plans to produce batteries for the next generation of EVs for Ford and Ford's luxury car brand, Lincoln. Due to the impact of tariff policies under the Trump administration, localization in the United States is becoming increasingly important.
SK On is hoping that the opening of its first Kentucky plant will help strengthen its production capacity in the United States. SK On Exclusive's plant, SK Battery America, is located in Georgia.
Recently, shipments to Hyundai and Kia Motors recorded 100% utilization. Meanwhile, Ford is selling a mid-range battery in the $30,000 range (approximately 4.42 million yen) equipped with LFP (lithium iron phosphate Eon) batteries.
The company has revealed plans to launch a new electric truck. With the operation of its first Kentucky plant, which produces triformer (Nickel, Cobalt, Manganese) batteries, it will be able to develop a diverse strategy.
