On the 22nd, the Gwangju District Court announced the sentence for defendant Ji (49), who was arrested and indicted on charges of murder and other crimes.
The prosecutors have requested a life sentence for Ji. Ji was arrested at around 1:12 a.m. on June 1st this year near Jindo Port in South Jeolla Province.
Ji is suspected of driving a car into the sea, killing his wife and two teenage sons in high school.
He had debts and was in financial difficulty, so he decided to commit suicide with his wife. However, he predicted that his remaining sons would continue to live without their parents, so he decided to kill them as well, according to the investigation.
After preparing sleeping pills and fatigue relief medicine with his wife, on the night of May 31, the second day of the family trip, Ji gave his sons the fatigue relief medicine mixed with sleeping pills.
They went to the vicinity of Mok Port, took sleeping pills together, and then jumped into the sea in their car. Ji, who felt a moment of fear, escaped alone through the open driver's seat window. His two sons and wife were in the sea.
After reaching land, Ji left the scene without attempting a rescue and instead drove to Gwangju in a friend's car, where he was arrested by the police.
Defendant Ji submitted a petition from his acquaintances and a letter of opinion requesting leniency to the court.
Presiding Judge Park Jae-seong said, "The defendant escaped from the sea alone. If he was not capable of doing so, shouldn't he have called the police and helped his family?"
The prosecutor pointed out, "Does the victim want leniency while living a happy life?" The prosecutor added, "The victim's two sons finished school and went on a family trip to delicious restaurants, trying to create happy memories."
"The victims fell asleep without any suspicion after drinking the drink that the defendant mixed with sleeping pills," he said. Regarding the time when the sleeping pills were mixed into the drinking water, he said, "The two sons were eating ramen on the first floor.
"But their father and mother were upstairs, spitting sleeping pills into their drinking water. The boys probably never dreamed that their parents were preparing to kill them," he lamented.
The sentencing hearing will be held at 2:00 p.m. on the 19th of next month.
