After the signing ceremony for the executive order at the White House, President Trump responded to a question from reporters during a question-and-answer session, asking, "What do you mean by saying that a purge or revolution is taking place in South Korea?"
President Trump responded, "They say he even went to a military base to get information, but if this is true, it is something that should never be done." He added, "I intend to meet with the new president to confirm whether this is true or not."
"As you know, the new president of South Korea will be here soon," he said, adding, "I look forward to meeting him, but we will never tolerate such a thing."
"I will not do that," he emphasized. "I definitely want to keep in step with him." President Trump posted on the social media platform "Truth Social" ahead of the summit.
"What is happening in South Korea?" he wrote. "It seems a purge or revolution is happening." He also wrote, "We cannot accept this and cannot do business there."
However, he did not provide any concrete evidence for describing the situation in South Korea as a "purge" or a "revolution." Some have suggested that Trump's posting of this kind of message just before the summit was a sign of the South Korean government's stance.
Some believe this is a negotiation strategy to extract maximum concessions on the opening of the market and the US investment fund.
At the general meeting, the group judged this to be a negotiating tactic by the US. "This is (President Trump's) maximum pressure strategy," he said, adding, "President Trump said, 'It's not easy for the South Korean side. We won't back down easily.'"
"He probably received a report saying that," Chung said. "President Lee will probably handle it well."
