North Korean authorities officially confirmed on the 2nd that Chairman Kim Jong-un departed to attend a military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese War of Resistance against Japan.
He is expected to arrive in Beijing in the afternoon. The Korean Central News Agency said on the same day, "Comrade Kim Jong Un will depart for a special ceremony on September 1 to attend the commemoration events for the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War."
The news agency reported that Kim's train crossed the border at around 2 a.m. on the same day. Kim's train was located on the Yalu River, which connects Sinuiju and Dandong in China.
It is believed that he crossed the border using a railway bridge. He added that he was accompanied by Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui and other senior officials of the party and government on his visit to China.
The released photos show Kim Jong Un in the office car on his private train, accompanied by a person believed to be Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui and Kim Song Nam (head of the Workers' Party's International Department).
Photographs were also released showing Kim smoking a cigarette in front of a train and talking with Foreign Minister Choe, former North Korean leader Cho Yong-won, and party secretary Kim Deok-hun, who were also on the train.
It is unclear whether they came out to see him off or to see him off. He was accompanied by his wife Ri Sol-ju, his daughter Kim Ju-ae, and his sister Kim Yo-jong, vice director of the party.
It has not been made public whether the visit is taking place or not. It is considered unusual for North Korea to make public the details of its supreme leader's overseas visit immediately after his departure.
The visit was reported by state media two days later, on September 12. Kim was invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the commemoration of China's 80th victory in the war, which will be held in Beijing on the 3rd.
