One of the Chinese who illegally entered Jeju Island in South Korea on a rubber boat was arrested in Cheongju City, North Chungcheong Province, and all six who illegally entered the country were arrested.
The Jeju Coast Guard announced that it had made an emergency arrest on the 12th of a Chinese national in his 30s, Mr. A, on suspicion of violating the Immigration Control Act.
On the afternoon of the 7th, Mr. A and other Chinese people left Nantong City, Jiangsu Province, southeastern China, to drive a 90 horsepower
The suspect is suspected of smuggling into the country from the coast of Jeju City in the early hours of the following day aboard a rubber boat equipped with an engine.
When the Maritime Police checked the scene, they found 12 fuel cans of different capacities, six life jackets, and bread wrapped in Chinese on the rubber boat.
Emergency food, including food, and a fishing rod were left behind. After confirming that Mr. A had moved to another area and tracking his whereabouts, the Coast Guard arrested him in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, at around 1 p.m. that day.
The investigation revealed that Mr. A had left Jeju by hiding in a truck loaded onto a cargo ship heading from Jeju to another region.
The truck driver, a Korean man in his 50s, was also killed at around 6:40 a.m. on the same day in Jeju.
The five other Chinese nationals who had smuggled into the country with Mr. A were arrested one after the other the day before, and two Chinese collaborators who had been assisting them on Jeju were also arrested.
On the 9th, a Chinese man in his 40s, Mr. B, was arrested at a motel in Seogwipo City. He was with six other people on a rubber boat, and had entered the country illegally to make money.
According to Mr. B's testimony, the Chinese people on the boat with him were all men and did not know each other. He also said that they had paid several million won each and had been transferred to Korea through a Chinese broker.
Mr. B had a history of being deported for illegal stay and was unable to enter Korea through normal means. He entered Cheju Island without a visa in October 2017.
He stayed in the country illegally until turning himself in and being deported on January 18th of last year. A joint investigation by the Coast Guard, police and military authorities confirmed that there was no suspicion of espionage or other anti-national activities.
