On the 12th, the Daejeon High Court in South Korea sentenced A, a man in his 70s, who was indicted on charges of violating the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (fraud), to three years in prison.
In addition, B, a man in his 70s who used the qualifications of a care worker of an acquaintance to aid Defendant A in his crimes, was sentenced to one year in prison.
Defendant A fell at a construction site in March 1997 and became paralyzed from the waist down, but by November of the same year he had recovered to the point where he could walk independently with the aid of a cane.
However, Defendant A reportedly used a wheelchair when going to the hospital and continued to "pretend he could not walk."
Defendant A received insurance benefits of 1.84 billion yen from the Korea Workers' Welfare and Compensation Service from June 1999 to August 2024.
The amount reached more than 1.2 billion won (approximately 127 million yen), which is more than the actual insurance benefits that the employee should have received.
In addition, defendant A conspired with B to use someone else's care worker qualifications and receive care expenses from the Korea Labor Welfare Corporation.
