Two Chinese suspects arrested in South Korean telecom giant KT fraudulent payment case
Two suspects in the "KT fraudulent payments" case, which caused great anxiety among the Korean people, have been arrested. Both are Chinese men in their 40s who carried small base stations in their cars and used them to steal illegally obtained income.
The Gyeonggi Nambu National Police Agency announced on the 17th that the cases were reported in Gwangmyeong City, Gyeonggi Province, and Geumcheon-gu, Seoul.
In connection with the KT Mobile phone fraudulent payment case, the company announced that it had arrested two suspects on suspicion of violating the Information and Communications Network Act (infringement), computer fraud, and the Act on the Prevention of Concealment of Criminal Proceeds.
The prime suspect, Mr. A (48), was arrested at Incheon Airport by police who had been lying in wait for him as he entered the country from China at around 2:03 pm on the 16th. Mr. A had been carrying the illegal small items used in the crime.
He admitted to having loaded the equipment for the base station into his car and driving it around the area where the crime occurred on the day of the crime. The police seized the equipment.
In addition, a man named Mr. B (44), who was involved in cashing in the illegally obtained profits, was also arrested at 2 p.m. on the 16th.
He was arrested in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul at around 1:53 a.m. Mr. B is suspected of being involved in cashing in gift certificates obtained through fraudulent transactions.
The KT fraudulent payment incident has resulted in many victims in a short period of time and has caused social unrest.
According to police statistics as of the 15th, a total of 199 reports of crimes have been received, with the total amount of damages reaching 126 million won (approximately 13.41 million yen).
