Documents obtained from the Military Manpower Administration by Rep. Hwang Hee, a member of the National Assembly's Defense Committee
As a result of the analysis, it was found that a total of 18,434 people (aged 18 to 40) who were subject to military service from 2021 to August this year renounced their nationality (lost their nationality + left their nationality).
Considering that the number of active military enlisted this year is 200,000, this means that one in ten military conscripts is no longer eligible to enlist by renouncing their citizenship.
Of those who renounced their nationality, the largest number, 12,153 (65.9%), were those who renounced their Korean nationality after acquiring foreign nationality through long-term stays abroad, such as studying abroad.
Additionally, there were 6,281 cases (34.1%) of people who were born with multiple nationalities but renounced their Korean nationality upon reaching adulthood.
In particular, the most common nationality acquired by those who renounced their Korean nationality was the United States, with 7,510 people (61.8%).
This was followed by Canada with 1,853 people (15.3%), Japan with 1,096 people (9.0%), Australia with 649 people (5.3%), and New Zealand with 413 people (3.4%).
