Mr. A (69), who was indicted on charges including violation of the Welfare Act, was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison and also ordered to complete a 40-hour stalking treatment program.
Suspect A was in a common-law marriage with a woman in her 40s, B, at his home in Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju, from July to August last year, after she broke up with him.
He became angry and pushed her down and burned her with a cigarette, causing injuries that required approximately two weeks of treatment.
Between October and November of the same year, Mr. B was arrested at a bar in Seowon-gu, Cheongju.
Suspect A assaulted B while dragging her around in and out of the store because she had been scolded by him. B's daughter, an elementary school student, was also with him at the time. Suspect A's assaults continued into the following year.
On May 6th of this year, at around 4:40pm, when Ms. B asked to break up with him, he threatened her and hit her with a shochu bottle and a frying pan, causing her to faint.
When B regained consciousness, they assaulted him again and threatened him with a knife from the kitchen. Furthermore, when B tried to call the police, they took his cell phone and broke it, and then called the cell phone of his daughter who was watching.
He even destroyed her phone. After that, when she lost contact with him, Suspect A began visiting her home and calling her from the next day, stalking her a total of 23 times, and he was reported to the police.
Chief Judge Ji explained the reason for the sentence, saying, "The level of violence against the victim was serious, and the act was extremely dangerous. Both the victim and the child appear to have suffered considerable mental distress."
However, he added, "The defendant is remorseful and this is his first offense, so we took that into consideration when sentencing him."
