Set against the backdrop of the 1990s, 'The Merchant of the Sea' depicts the story of individuals overcoming the currency crisis. Its blend of humour, realism, and solid storytelling has resonated with viewers, driving its strong performance through word-of-mouth.
In that day's episode, when the captain of a distant-water fishing vessel, scheduled to load safety boots, refused to grant loading permission, Hongshin Trading Company President Jeong Cha-ran (Kim Hae-un) personally intervened to persuade him. During this process, it was revealed that Kang Jin-yeong (Song Dong-il), known as 'Caesar Kang', was Taepung father. The captain changed his mind, stating, "You even ate meals with your father! You even boarded the ship!" Addressing the captain's concern that "loading the goods will cause delivery accidents," President Park Yun-cheol (Jin Sung-kyu) of Shupak, a graduate of the Maritime University who had also served on tankers, personally boarded the fishing vessel. The problem of loading 5,000 pairs of safety boots onto the fishing boat was also resolved with the market people pitching in as if it were their own business. They placed the shoe boxes inside crab crates and transferred them to the ship.
As the successful departure drew near, police suddenly descended upon the port following an alert. Tension peaked as the crew's identity checks and verifications continued. Taepung (Lee Joon-ho) leapt onto an oil tanker carrying sacks of flour, then cleverly scattered them into the air to distract the police. Watching anxiously, Mi-son (Kim Min-ha) feared he might have fallen overboard and was about to jump into the sea with a lifebuoy. Seeing Taepung return safely, she embraced him in relief. Taepung confessed to Mison, "I think I might like Chief Oh."
Having safely delivered the safety boots to Mexico, Taepung boldly handed over 100 million won in cash to the unscrupulous loan shark Ryu Hikyung (Lee Jaegyoon) and retrieved the promissory note. He even made a profit of over 10,000 dollars.
Taepung immediately began searching for the next item. While finding nothing promising at the export expo, Yun-seong's recent factory production of "the helmet ranked number one in Europe and the US" became a new starting point. Though he found the export item, he couldn't figure out how to proceed. Taepung visited former Sales Manager Ma-jin (Lee Chang-hoon) and pleaded, "Please teach me the job." As the head of a family bearing its livelihood, Ma-jin couldn't risk a reckless venture with Tepun Trading, now little more than a name. Yet, moved by Taepung’s heartfelt plea, he relented. Clutching the helmet Taepung had handed him with the insistence, "You must bring this back," Ma-jin reported for duty at Typhoon Trading.
'Typhoon Family' has been riding a wave of momentum since its premiere, creating a whirlwind of excitement. Having surpassed a 9% viewership rating in episode 4, expectations are high that it could achieve a 10% rating – a feat rarely seen these days. Episode 8 of 'Typhoon Family' airs on tvN at 9:10pm on the 2nd.
