韓国クーパンの “明け方配送”で、ドライバーの「過労死」がもう一人
Another driver dies from overwork in South Korea's Coupang's ”dawn delivery” service
It has been revealed that there was another delivery driver besides the late Cho Seulgi who died from overwork while making a delivery at dawn at Coupang, South Korea's largest online retailer.
According to the "Occupational Disease Assessment Certificate" released by Park Hong-bae, a member of the National Assembly's Climate, Energy, Environment and Labor Committee on the 9th, the late Mr. A died of a myocardial infarction on July 24th of this year.
The worker died after being taken to a hospital, and the Korea Workers' Welfare Service recognized the death as an occupational disease. Three days before his death, Mr. A complained of chest pain while resting at home in the afternoon. He was taken to a hospital and received treatment, but he died.
It was revealed that Mr. A worked an average of 62 hours a week until just before his death, and performed nighttime delivery work six days a week. The judging committee concluded, "Nighttime work and excessive working hours were factors that contributed to the onset of the disease.
"There is a significant causal relationship between the two," the company said. Mr. A signed a contract with a Coupang sales office, arrived at work at 9 p.m., and delivered approximately 237 packages by 7 a.m. the following morning without any breaks or meals.
According to the judgment, Coupang maintained a policy of delivering all products without weight restrictions, resulting in high labor intensity. Mr. A's average working hours in the four weeks prior to his illness reached 62 hours and 42 minutes.
The average for the 12 weeks before the onset of the disease was 61 hours and 45 minutes per week.
