韓国仁川空港、預け手荷物スーツケースに「14億ウォン分」札束
1.4 billion won worth of bills found in checked suitcase at Incheon Airport in South Korea
A large amount of foreign currency of questionable origin was reportedly seized at the departure gate of Incheon Airport in South Korea, prompting customs authorities to launch an investigation.
According to Newsis on the 14th, at around 6:04 a.m. on the 13th, a passenger was shot in the east and west open inspection rooms of the 2nd passenger terminal at Incheon Airport in South Korea.
A huge stack of banknotes was discovered in the checked baggage of a passenger. The stack was wrapped in a towel inside a carry-on suitcase, and most of the bag was packed with foreign currency.
The bags in question were two suitcases left by a Korean man named Mr. A, who was leaving Incheon for Hong Kong at 8:20 a.m.
One of the suitcases contained 45 million Japanese yen (approximately 425 million won), while the other suitcase contained 44 million Japanese yen (approximately 415.44 million won) and 400,000 US dollars.
The total amount of the items in the two suitcases, when converted to Korean won, comes to approximately 1,424,400,000 won (approximately 151 million yen).
Under the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act, passengers are required to declare to customs if they carry or bring in foreign currency exceeding $10,000 when entering or leaving the country.
It was confirmed that Mr. A had attempted to take out foreign currency without a separate declaration to customs, and Incheon Airport Headquarters Customs issued a criminal complaint against Mr. A regarding the source of funds.
Regarding how he came into possession of the foreign currency, Mr. A reportedly said, "I deposited it on behalf of a friend."
The customs office has determined that Mr. A's source of funds is unclear and is continuing its investigation.
"We cannot confirm any cases that are currently under investigation," he said. However, given the recent cases of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin being used as a means of taking foreign currency out of the country, airport authorities have also taken note of the situation.
The case is said to be attracting attention, and the customs office is expected to investigate whether there are any other similar cases, in addition to grasping the circumstances surrounding the case.
