The tournament will be held at Goyang Sports Complex on the 80th. The tournament is being organized by the Son Kee-chung Memorial Foundation and SPOTV as part of the government's commemorative projects for the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation (independence).
The event is co-hosted by news and supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (equivalent to Japan's Sports Agency) and Goyang Special City.
At the conference, a signature campaign will be held for the first time to request that Son Kee-chung's English name (SON KEE CHUNG) be written in Hangul and that his nationality be written as the Republic of Korea.
The first page of the IOC Official Records shows Son Kee-chung's nationality as Japanese and his name as "KITEI SON." Thanks to the sustained efforts of the Korean government and the sports world, some historical background was introduced.
The official name has not yet been corrected, so Son Kee-chung remains the "sad winner." The petition was launched at the Games on the 16th and will continue until the IOC submission in August 2026.
The Son Kee-chung Memorial Foundation is emphasizing the historical significance of this event, which marks the 90th anniversary of Korea's victory at the 2026 Berlin Olympics.
Under the slogan "Liberation is freedom," the race included a full course, half course, and 10-kilometer course.
A total of 15,000 participants will take part in three events, running on the car-free Second Freedom Road, making this the only special race in Korea.
Son Kee-chung is said to be a symbolic figure who restored national pride during the Japanese colonial period.
He has been highly praised. In celebration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Korea, he has been selected as a "symbolic figure for overcoming national crises" along with Admiral Yi Sun-sin at the National Museum of Korea, and a special exhibition is being held to highlight his historical value once again.
Kim Seong-tae, chairman of the Son Kee-chung Memorial Foundation, said, "It is now time for Son Kee-chung to record the pain of the imperialist era with pride," and added, "I hope the IOC will celebrate his victory with joy and pride."
"We need to correct their nationality and name so they can stay."
