The Korea-Japan Cooperation Committee, of which Kim Ki-byeong is chairman, is a private organization established by then-President Park Chung-hee in 1969.
The event has been held alternately in Seoul and Tokyo to promote people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, but in 2025 it will be held in Jeju.
This time, we had Taro Aso, Chairman of the Japan-Korea Cooperation Committee, and Koichi Mizushima, Ambassador to South Korea.
Approximately 70 people, including the head of the Korean Embassy in Japan, are expected to attend. Chairman Kim said, "It is a special honor to be able to hold the Joint Committee in Jeju, Korea's leading tourist city, in 2025, which marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and Korea.
"I hope this meeting will serve as an opportunity to further strengthen understanding, cooperation, and trust between Japan and Korea in the future," Kim said.
He is considered to be the key figure in bringing the then-deadlocked Japan-Korea relationship back to a new state. In recognition of these achievements, he was awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation in June.
The theme of this joint committee meeting is "Re-establishing a new era for Japan-Korea relations and guiding its direction." In the political arena, former South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin and Japan's Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masataka Okano are scheduled to give speeches.
