Korean online retailer Coupang: 33.7 million leaked data from ”former Chinese employee”... Already departed from Korea

The leak of information such as names, phone numbers, and addresses of over 30 million users of the South Korean e-commerce company Coupang was not the result of an external hack but rather an insider.
According to industry sources on the 30th, Coupang customer information was allegedly leaked by a Chinese national who worked at Coupang.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Cyber Investigation Unit received a complaint from Coupang on the 25th and has begun an investigation into the personal information leak.
However, it has been reported that the employee in question is a foreign national who has already left Coupang and left Korea, raising concerns that the investigation may be difficult.
The complaint filed by Coupang with the police does not identify the defendant, but lists him as an "unknown person."
Coupang said in a statement on the 20th that it had "confirmed that customer personal information had been viewed without permission."
Coupang said, "No traces of external intrusion into Coupang's systems or internal networks were found." Coupang previously stated, "In a recent follow-up investigation, approximately 33.7 million customer accounts were found.
"We have confirmed that personal information of account holders has been leaked without permission," the company said in a statement. This is a significant increase from the approximately 4,500 cases initially identified on the 18th.
The leaked information includes customer names, email addresses, delivery address books (recipient names, phone numbers, and addresses), and some order information.
However, the company explained that payment information, credit card numbers, login information, etc. were not leaked. As a result of its own investigation, Coupang found that since June 24th, data has been stored for a long period of time on an overseas server.
The company believes that there was an abnormal access. The company immediately blocked the unauthorized access route, strengthened internal monitoring, and brought in experts from an external security firm to strengthen its response system.
A Coupang representative said, "We apologize for causing concern," and added, "The investigation by the authorities is currently underway, and we are actively cooperating."
