The United States broke its "silence" four days after the incident in which a Chinese aircraft carrier aimed radar at a Japanese Self-Defense Force fighter jet.

The criticism was directed at the radar targeting. In response, Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi expressed strong regret at a press conference held earlier that day.
Japan protested to China and demanded that the incident not be repeated, but China responded by saying that "Japan has habitually interfered with its own legitimate military training."
Since then, China has continued to demonstrate force around Okinawa, and tensions between Japan and China have been rising.
