To mark the third anniversary of the death of Ryuichi Sakamoto, a world-renowned film composer and environmental activist who passed away in 2023, the "Ryuichi Sakamoto Tribute Concert" will be held on Sunday, October 5th at 7:30 pm.
Ryuichi Sakamoto is a genius musician who was ahead of his time. He formed the group "YMO" in the 1980s and became a pioneer of electronic music.
He made his debut in the film industry in 1983, when he acted in and composed the music for the film "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence."
In 1989, he composed the music for Bertolucci's film "The Last Emperor," becoming the first Asian to win an Academy Award for Best Original Score.
He has also won a Grammy Award and a Golden Globe Award, establishing himself as a global master.
Han Joohoney, the Principal Conductor of the Linz State Opera in Austria, who played the piano at the Ryuichi Sakamoto Tribute Concert at the "Festival," will once again take to the stage to perform.
Liszt's Joo Yong-seong and violinist Joo Young-kyung will join the band and will perform together on stage.
A total of 18 songs, including "Rain," "Opus," and "Aqua," will be performed with the audience, creating a stage where they can spend time remembering Ryuichi Sakamoto and enjoy a feast of music.
Ryuichi Sakamoto, who has a deep connection with Korea, has been battling illness for over 10 years, but in 2017 he appeared in the film "Castle of Heavenly Destiny" directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk.
He was in charge of the music for the film, which won him the 2018 Grand Bell Award for Best Original Score and the 2018 Busan International Film Festival's Asian Filmmaker Award. Many film fans in Korea mourned his passing, and in August 2023,
The 19th Jecheon International Film Festival presented him with the Jecheon International Film Music Award and held a tribute concert to honor him and his film music.
Following this, the concert will be held at the Lotte Concert Hall in 2024, followed by performances at the SK Atrium in Suwon and the Olyu Art Hall in Guro-gu, Seoul.
The Ryuichi Sakamoto Tribute Concert, which has sold out all its tickets for the first two performances, including the March 2025 performance at the IBK Hall in Seoul Arts Center Hall and the April 2025 performance at Jonan Art Center Hall, will be held on October 5th.
The tour will resume in Seoul amidst the enthusiastic cheers of the audience.
