Low Life is a series that tells the story of a group of hardworking and honest outlaws who gather to obtain a treasure ship buried at sea in 1977, engaging in a series of deceptions and betrayals. Ryu Seung-ryong took on the role of Oh Gwang-sok, the leader of the group who gathers from across the country after learning of the existence of the treasure, delivering a passionate performance.
Low Life is a collaboration between director Kang Yoon-sung, who helmed the series 'Casino' and the film 'Crime City', and writer Yoon Tae-ho, known for the web comics ‘Insiders’ and 'Miseon-Miseon'. The series also garnered attention for its star-studded cast, including Ryu Seung-ryong, Yang Se-jong, Im Soo-jung, Kim Eun-sung, Lee Dong-fi, and Yunho (TVXQ).
This marks Yunho's first acting role in a while, not as a member of TVXQ but as actor Jung Yunho. Yunho, who took on the role of Borg, a rogue from Mokpo, received praise for his performance in “Pine.”
Ryu Seung-ryong commented, “Actor Jung Yunho did not merely enrich ‘Low Life’; he played a pivotal role. He is an icon of sincerity and effort. I never once felt that he was a singer by profession.”
He added, “We still gather together, and he has never missed a single meeting. He even flies in from Japan. His passion is incredible.”
Ryu Seung-ryong shared an anecdote about Yunho, saying, “I was surprised during the overall reading. He didn't have the script. He had memorized everything. I wanted to ask, ‘Did you really memorize it all?’”
He further said, “He was that determined. That kind of resolve. The atmosphere became solemn. That was a very good catalyst.”
Ryu Seung-ryong praised him, saying, “Where can you find an actor who memorizes everything even though there is plenty of time? Not only did he memorize it, but he was also fully prepared.” He added, “When he used the dialect, his voice changed (became lower). I was surprised on set.”
Ryu Seung-ryong also shared a behind-the-scenes story, saying, “If it's Mokpo, then Mokpo; if it's Busan, then Busan. We filmed a lot in those regions. Normally, cafes and buffets don't come that often, but when working with Yunho, cafes and buffets kept coming from Japan. So it was really good,” making everyone laugh.
Ryu Seung-ryong continued to boast about the warm atmosphere on set. He said, “On the last day, the director, writer, staff, and actors with free time gathered to watch ‘Pine.’ We watched it laughing and clapping, it was that intimate.” He added, “It was truly the best. The process was great too, and while filming, I thought, ‘I'm truly happy. Let's enjoy the moment.’” He expressed his affection for the project.
