Actor Lee Dong Gun has been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a rare disease. On the 28th, SBS variety show "The Growth Diary of a Son in His 40s" showed Lee Dong Gun visiting the hospital.
On this day, Lee Dong Gun's eyes were red, causing concern to those who saw them. He visited a doctor and was told, "When it's not too bad, it's just bloodshot and I feel a little unfocused. When it's bad, the bloodshot is gone and I can't focus.
"I became very sensitive to light, to the point where it hurt to look at the light. My eyesight also deteriorated. It lasted for a year," he revealed.
The doctor asked, "I heard you had a lot of symptoms of uveitis," and replied, "Uveitis is a condition that affects the uvea.
"The cornea plays a role in regulating light and focus, and if it becomes inflamed it can lead to pain, redness, glare and decreased vision," he explained.
Lee Dong Gun said, "It happens to me at least once a month. I take the additional antibiotics I get from the ophthalmologist every time.
"It didn't get better without it, so I kept putting in eye drops. It's been going on for a year, and I'm in a difficult situation," she said. The doctor said, "It's strange that it keeps coming back. It could be ankylosing spondylitis. The spine is not straight.
It's a rare disease that affects about 1% of the Korean population. Symptoms include uveitis. Did you experience any other symptoms?"
Lee Dong Gun said, "Ten years ago, I was sleeping and felt like I was being stabbed. Even breathing felt like a sting.
I endured it while being careful not to do anything. I didn't think it was ankylosing spondylitis at all, so I got the injection and had the test done." After that, the doctor explained the results of the test. "Recurring uveitis, sacroiliac syndrome,
"Inflammation of the joints was observed. Doctors make a diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis by examining the symptoms. We can diagnose ankylosing spondylitis," he said, explaining that he had discovered the gene for ankylosing spondylitis.
The doctor said, "The most important thing is to manage inflammation. You should stay away from alcohol, tobacco, sugar and flour. Vitamin C is good for inflammation."
