Recently, Coupang Play's 'Just Makeup' unveiled its programme. This super-sized makeup survival show features makeup artists representing K-beauty globally, showcasing their unique styles and engaging in fierce competition.
Kim Sung-jin, who runs a beauty shop, took on the challenge with the nickname "Genie of the 37th Year". She shared, "I can become someone from the past – Shim Eun-ah, Park Joon-hoon, the late Choi Jin-sil, Shim Hye-jin. It seems there were too many. As someone from an older generation, I can show that there's a slight difference. I thought, 'Why not enjoy myself to the fullest for once, after so long?'" she revealed, her eyes sparkling.
Makeup judge Kim Sung-jin was model RISABAE, and both had reddened eyes facing each other. RISABAE's first workplace had been Kim Sung-jin's shop. RISABAE confessed, "Standing in that seat, so many emotions came flooding back," while Kim Sung-jin remarked, "We must have both recalled the past. I think those memories will surface again in the future. I believe the tears we shed were born from the memories we hold."
The makeup concept Kim Sung-jin presented that day was 'strong older sister'. She explained, "Though I'm the eldest, I want to be a strong older sister. So I chose a slightly more assertive makeup look. Honestly, I've spent my time running the shop without much makeup. I lost confidence and practised a lot. They say you never forget what you learn with your body, right? What's ingrained will show through," she explained, adding, "I wanted to show a strong woman." Unfortunately, Kim Sung-jin was eliminated in the first round. RISABAE critiqued, "Technically, it was very perfect, but for the strong older sister impression, perhaps it would have been better to emphasise other features rather than just the eyes. I have some lingering thoughts about the concept."
When the broadcast aired, Kim Sung-jin's appearance on the programme sparked both discussion and mixed reactions. This was due to her late husband, actor Cho Min-gi, being viewed as a perpetrator in the MeToo movement and taking his own life while awaiting police questioning. Consequently, her television comeback drew supportive comments such as "It's been a while since we saw her happy face" and "The wife is not at fault". However, some negative reactions emerged, including "This could be upsetting for victims" and "It would have been better to stay quiet".
