Seoul City Superintendent of Education seeks two years in prison for special hiring of dismissed teacher = South Korea
Cho Hee-young, South Korea's Seoul City Superintendent of Education (head of the local government's education administration), was sentenced to two years in prison by an appeals court in a case in which she was accused by prosecutors of illegally special hiring a fired teacher. 7
At the sentencing hearing held at the Seoul High Court on Sunday, the prosecution argued, ``We want him to be sentenced to a sentence commensurate with the crime so that unfairness will not prevail.''
Superintendent Cho specially hired five people from October to December 2018, including dismissed teachers from the National Teachers Union.
At the first trial, he was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison (suspended for 2 years). Prosecutors said, ``Superintendent Cho's special hiring practices hindered fair competition and deprived applicants of employment opportunities.''
It pointed out. He also claimed, ``Superintendent Cho committed the crime not for personal gain, but for political gain.'' In his final statement, Superintendent Cho said, ``I did not receive any money or appoint aides.
"I did not abuse my power to do anything." He also stated, ``This case is a matter of public interest in reinstating a teacher who has been dismissed.'' In addition, ``As a superintendent for 10 years, I have committed illegal acts.''
"We never issued any instructions, and the trial court's judgment is unfair." Superintendent Cho also currently serves as the chairman of the City/Provincial Education Superintendents Council. If the first instance judgment becomes final, he will lose his position as superintendent. Korea
Under national law, those who have been sentenced to imprisonment or worse and whose sentence has not yet expired are eligible for retirement. The appeals court's judgment is scheduled to be handed down on the 18th of next month.
