On the afternoon of the 27th, an altar was set up for Lee Sung-kyun at the funeral home of Seoul National University Hospital. The pallbearer was the actress and wife of the deceased, Jeon Hye-jin.
Once the altar was set up, the first person to visit the altar was the representative of the producer of the movie "Crime City," Jang Won-seok. Next to arrive were director Lee Won-seok, who co-starred with Lee Sung-kyun in the movie "Killing Romance" released this year, and actor Yoo Jae-myung, who appeared with her in the movie "Happy Land," whose release was postponed indefinitely.
Other actors and people in the film industry who were usually close to him also came to pay their condolences. Actors Kim Sang-chul, Sol Kyung-gu, Cho Jung-suk, Cho Jin-jun, Kim Sang-ho, Ko Kyung-pyo, Moon Seong-geun, and Ho Kwang-han visited the condolence line.
Lee Sung-kyun was found dead in Waryong Park in Seoul's Jongno-gu on the morning of the 27th. He had already passed away when the police checked his car. The police found him by tracking his cell phone location after receiving a report from the deceased's manager that he had not returned home, leaving a note that appeared to be a suicide note.
The police believe that Lee Sung Kyun committed suicide and are investigating the exact circumstances of his death. His agency, HODU&U Entertainment, stated, "It is very sad and painful," and asked, "Please refrain from spreading false facts based on speculation and guesswork so that the deceased's final path will not be regretted.
Since October of this year, Lee Sung Kyun has been under police investigation on suspicion of using illegal drugs. He was being interrogated after he stated that he had dosed himself with marijuana and ketamine multiple times at the home of Mr. A, the head of the office of an entertainment facility in Gangnam, Seoul, but all drug tests were negative.
Lee Sung Kyun was interrogated by the police on three occasions. While he stated that he did not know that the drugs were illegal, he accused Mr. A of extortion, claiming that he was robbed of 350 million won ($350,000). Last week, he was interrogated for the third time for 19 hours, after which he requested a lie detector investigation.
Following Lee Sung Kyun's death, the case against him for alleged drug use will end with "no prosecution".
The film industry was saddened by the news of his sudden death. The pre-release films "Deliverance: PROJECT SILENCE" and "The Land of Happiness" became his last works. Both films are on indefinite postponement of release.
Mourning continues for Lee Sung-kyun, who ended his 22-year acting career at the age of 48.
