サムスン電子の元幹部ら、中国に半導体技術を流出させた疑いで起訴
Samsung Electronics former executives charged with leaking semiconductor technology to China
On the 3rd, Lee Chun, head of the information technology crime investigation department at the Seoul Central District Public Prosecutors Office, accused Samsung Electronics former executives of leaking South Korean core technology to a Chinese semiconductor manufacturer.
He was arrested and indicted on charges of violating the Public Protection Act. Those indicted were Mr. Kim, the former manager of Samsung Electronics, and Mr. Bang, the former manager of Company A, a partner company that did business with Samsung Electronics. According to prosecutors, Kim is 20 years old.
In 2016, he retired from Samsung Electronics and moved to a Chinese start-up company, Changxin Technology (CXMT). At that time, they brought along information such as the manufacturing process of the 18 nano DRAM semiconductor developed by Samsung Electronics.
There is a suspicion that he sent the information and provided it to CXMT. Mr. Kim, whose specialty is semiconductors, handed over technical materials on seven core processes including ``evaporation'' and received tens of billions of won (billions of yen) from CXMT.
It is believed that he received the compensation he deserved. It is also believed that the company offered more than 500 million won (approximately 54 million yen) and poached about 20 technical personnel from Samsung Electronics and related companies.
Mr. Bang is suspected of colluding with Mr. Kim and giving CXMT the blueprints of semiconductor devices that Company A delivered to Samsung Electronics.
On the other hand, CXMT, which was only established in 2016, has rapidly improved its semiconductor development capabilities by poaching engineers from South Korea and the United States.
I'm looking forward to it. It is now the largest DRAM semiconductor manufacturer in China and is closing the technological gap with rival companies in South Korea and the United States.
Kim and Bang were arrested on the 15th of last month, but prosecutors plan to continue investigating those involved.
