Arrest warrant dismissed for 10 students who attempted to break into the presidential office = South Korea
On the 9th, the Seoul Western District Court rejected an arrest warrant against 10 members of the Korean University Student Progressive Union (Daejinren), a left-leaning student group that tried to break into the presidential office, the presidential palace of South Korea.
. Judge Song Kyung-ho, chief judge in charge of warrants at the same court, spent about an hour from 10 a.m. on the same day, interrogating suspects before they were detained (substantive examination of warrants), and then said, ``Given acts of collective violence.''
The arrest warrants against all members were dismissed on the basis that they did not plan or carry out the plan. Chief Judge Song said, ``The suspects have acknowledged the circumstances and details of the crime, as well as the objective facts, and will continue the investigation and trial in the future.''
``They have also vowed to faithfully attend the event,'' and explained, ``Considering their age, occupation, residential relationship, and the principle of non-detainment investigation under the Criminal Procedure Code, it is difficult to recognize the necessity of detaining them.''
. Daejinren members gathered in front of the president's office around 1 pm on the 6th, chanted things like ``Special prosecutor Kim Kun-hee,'' and attempted to break through the checkpoint before being arrested by the police.
Police applied for arrest warrants for 16 people, but prosecutors did not seek warrants for six of them, taking into account their criminal history and age.
The 10 people for whom prosecutors requested warrants face charges including trespassing into communal buildings and violating the Act on Public Assembly and Demonstrations.
. Some of them were charged with injuring public servants such as soldiers who were providing security (obstruction of execution of official duties resulting in injury). Meanwhile, about 30 members of Daishinren held a press conference in front of the court on the morning of the 9th.
``The reality in South Korea is that fairness and common sense are nowhere to be found. This afternoon, our comrades will also be released so that we can stand here together.''
Police informed them that they could not gather within 100 meters of the courthouse based on the Gathering Law, and issued three dispersal orders.
Ta. The Dashinren voluntarily disbanded after the press conference, and there were no conflicts with police.
