Numerous restaurants caught disguising Japanese yellowtail as Korean-made yellowtail = South Korea
A large number of restaurants in Jeju-do were arrested for selling yellowtail produced in Japan falsely saying it was produced in Korea. The Jeju Autonomous Police Corps and the National Seafood Quality Control Institute (Suishinwon) announced on the 7th and from the 13th to the 23rd of last month.
As a result of a joint crackdown, it was announced that seven stores were arrested for violating the country of origin labeling for yellowtail, a typical winter sashimi.
The businesses that were caught were sashimi shops and other cafeterias, and the five shops were disguising Japanese yellowtail as domestically produced.
or displayed in a manner that may cause confusion. The other two stores were arrested on suspicion of selling yellowtail produced in Japan but failing to indicate the country of origin.
In particular, one store was found to have violated country of origin labeling for more than two years, from October 2021 to February of this year.
The total amount of Japanese yellowtail sold by these seven stores in violation of the country of origin labeling was estimated at 4,628 kg. The local police force may misrepresent or confuse the country of origin.
The company plans to complete its investigation of the five businesses that displayed such signs by the end of this week and will refer the case to the public prosecutor's office. The two stores that did not display the country of origin were fined by Suishinin.
Park Sang-hyun, head of the investigation division of the Self-Government Police, said, ``As a result of the investigation, there were no violations at the import destination or intermediate distribution stage, but some general restaurants, which are the final consumers, were unconscionable.''
Consumers and good businesses were harmed by this act. We request that related businesses comply with the obligation to label the country of origin, as it will also damage Jeju's tourism image.''
Ha Jeong-im, head of the Jeju Support Quality Control Team at Suishinwon, said, ``Recently, along with the phenomenon of avoiding seafood from Japan, some companies have appeared that violate the country of origin labeling.
We will continue to strengthen our cooperation with related organizations such as the local government police group and strive to ensure that country of origin labeling is faithfully enforced."
