"Mainland China expresses great concern and sends its heartfelt condolences to our Taiwanese compatriots affected by this disaster," Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said in a statement released that morning.
"We are closely monitoring the disaster and future developments and are prepared to provide the necessary support for disaster relief," he added.
Chinese state-run media, including Xinhua News Agency and CCTV (China Central Television), have been covering the Taiwan earthquake and damage situation as their main news.
Chinese internet users also expressed concern for the safety of their Taiwanese compatriots and posted comments on the Internet hoping for the damage to be minimized.
At 7:58 a.m. on the 3rd (local time), the eastern Taiwanese city of Hualien experienced a magnitude 7.4 earthquake, the strongest in 25 years.
