Recidivism rate for ”Drunk Driving” remains high... Average of 43% over the past five years... Korea

The National Investigation Headquarters of the Korea National Police Agency is conducting a "Special Investigation Period for Major Traffic Offenses" for 100 days starting from the 1st of this month, targeting habitual drunk driving violators and others.

The total number of cases was 30,150. Of these, 55,007 were repeat offenders who committed drunk driving twice or more, with the repeat offense rate recorded at 42.26%.

The number of cases has decreased from 117,549 in 2020, when the COVID-19 virus infection pandemic began, to 115,882 in 2021, but the number of cases has decreased as the COVID-19 pandemic gradually recovers.
The number of cases increased again to 130,283 in 2022 and 130,150 in 2023. The five-year average recidivism rate was 43.62%.
Recently, the penalties for repeat drunk driving offenders have been revised.
Research has shown that "reinforcement" is not particularly effective at reducing recidivism rates.
Experts say, "In addition to strengthening penalties, we should explore a variety of solutions to eradicate drunk driving."
