It's now easier to throw away trash in the heart of Seoul... 30 designer trash bins installed in 15 locations in the city center (Korea)
It will become easier to throw away trash in downtown Seoul. The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 8th that it has developed a new design for trash bins to be placed on sidewalks and installed them on a trial basis in 15 locations in the city center, two at each location, for a total of 30 locations.
The trash can was promoted as part of the Design Seoul 2.0 project announced by the Seoul Metropolitan Government last year to create a 'fun, vibrant city of Seoul.'
The city of Seoul has been promoting a friendly and positive image of trash cans, while also raising concerns about the mass dumping of trash on the streets, its foul odors, and the damage it causes to the city's aesthetics.
We worked with citizens, environmental officials, and experts to find a design that could solve public problems at the same time. The two trash cans we developed through this process were Type A and Type B, which are simple shapes with curves.
There are two types, Type A and Type B, which have a smiling face to add a friendly element. There are also specialized types that can be easily transformed by putting a hat on top of a general trash can depending on the location and purpose, such as parks and events.
The city of Seoul explained that it focused on identifiability and convenience so that the recyclables can be easily disposed of and collected, while also taking into consideration symbolism and cleanliness.
In the future, we will complement the design by having citizens and managers evaluate the aesthetics, convenience, harmony with the surrounding area, cleanliness, ease of collection, etc.
The plan is to expand the application throughout the autonomous region. As a first step, Type A (general and specialized types), which received the highest design preference among local people and experts in the autonomous region, will be installed in five locations in Chung-gu.
The new trash cans have been installed on a trial basis in eight locations in Jongno-gu and two locations in Dongdaemun-gu. Choi In-gyu, a design policy officer at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, "The new trash cans are designed to be convenient, fun, and have a positive impact on the cityscape.
The design takes all these factors into consideration and will contribute greatly to increasing the convenience of life in the city center. We will continue to develop new designs for attractive and vibrant cities and improve the quality of life for our citizens.
