Prime Minister Han Deok-soo responds to patient death due to emergency room transfer: ”We will continue to implement medical reforms” - South Korea
Prime Minister Han Deok-soo expressed his intention to reform the medical system regarding the problem of emergency patients dying because they cannot find an advanced general hospital that can admit them, known as "emergency room dumping."
On the 9th, Prime Minister Han posted on Facebook, "We will do our best to operate the emergency medical treatment system, while suspending fundamental medical reform measures that utilize essential medical care and local medical care and expand the emergency medical system specialized for children.
Prime Minister Han said that he will implement it first. Recently, a 3-year-old girl fell into a puddle and went into cardiac arrest. She was rushed to the emergency room of Boeun Hanyang Hospital and received emergency treatment.
Regarding the patient's death after being refused transfer by an advanced hospital, the article stated, "This incident clearly illustrates the collapse of essential local medical care that South Korea is facing."
Prime Minister Han said that a nurse at a large hospital in Seoul collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage while working, but the hospital did not have a doctor who could perform surgery immediately, and the nurse died because the timing was not right.
He also mentioned other examples such as the above, and pointed out that "the medical environment in farming and fishing villages is even worse than in cities, and child patients are in even more of a blind spot than adult patients."
"The government has embarked on medical reform to create a world where such tragedies no longer occur. We thank the people who support medical reform despite the inconvenience and anxiety they endure.
I would like to express my gratitude to each and every medical staff member who is working tirelessly and silently to protect the front lines."
