The Supreme Prosecutors' Office of South Korea announced on the 10th that it had indicted 765 people for election violations in the 22nd National Assembly elections and was investigating 709 people.
Cases in which people were arrested on suspicion of trespassing after installing cameras in public places were excluded from the statistics because charges of violating the Public Offices Election Act were not applied.
In terms of the types of election violations, out of the 765 cases, 31 were fake news (spreading false facts and slanderous propaganda).
The most common was 5 cases (41.2%). This was followed by 141 cases (18.4%) of monetary violations, 34 cases (4.4%) of election violence and interference, and 34 cases (4.1%) of illegal activities by public officials and organizations.
A prosecutor explained, "Since the 19th general election, there have been more violations related to fake news than those related to money and goods."
In the 19th general election, fake news-related violations accounted for 31.1% of the total, the first time that money-related violations (30.5%)
Subsequently, in the 20th and 21st general elections, fake news violations were the most common at 41.8% and 36.8%, respectively.
A source said, "It is difficult to apply the short six-month statute of limitations to election cases, so the police and the Election Commission
"We will continue to cooperate with relevant agencies, including the police, and will do our best to investigate and handle election crimes, including by swiftly sharing information related to the case from the early stages of the investigation," he said.
