Naver collaborates with Intel on AI, while AI research with Samsung also progresses at the same time - Korean media
Pat Gelsinger, CEO of US semiconductor giant Intel, announced on the 9th of this month (local time) that the company will cooperate with IT giant Naver on artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors.
Currently, Naver is working with Samsung Electronics to develop an AI semiconductor technology called "Mach 1." However, this time, the company is also developing Intel's AI semiconductor "Gaudi" separately.
The two companies also plan to jointly research software that uses AI. Lee Dong-soo, director of hyperscale AI efficiency at Naver Cloud, the company that handles cloud services under Naver, said,
"The collaboration with Intel has no impact on the collaboration with Samsung Electronics," he emphasized. "Mach 1" is a chip that makes AI semiconductors lighter, while "Gaudi" is a chip made by Nvidia.
The aim is to compete with AI semiconductors that are being developed by the U.S. Naver and Intel will enable Korean startups and universities to use Gaudi to develop various software and conduct industry-academia collaborative research.
To this end, they launched a joint research project called the AI Collaborative Research Center (NICL).
Intel is focusing on Gaudi, which includes software and hardware, while Naver is focusing on its own large-scale language model.
Both companies intend to expand the AI market, which is currently centered around LLM's HyperClover X.
