Seoul city council members of South Korea's ruling party may face disciplinary action over ”Rising Sun Flag Permit Ordinance”... Party begins investigation
Ahead of the 22nd general election, Seoul city council members from the People Power Party who proposed abolishing restrictions on the use of the Rising Sun Flag in public places are facing a party-level investigation.
According to an interview with E-Daily, the city council members who agreed to the "Rising Sun Flag Ordinance Bill" on the 17th received a letter of consent from the People's Power Representative Office (house leader) on the same day.
Prior to this, Seoul City Council member Kim Ki-ryong said on the 3rd, "The use of symbols of Japanese imperialism in public places has been restricted.
The ordinance was promulgated in January 2021 and bans the display of the Japanese Rising Sun Flag and other symbols reminiscent of Japanese imperialism in public places within Seoul.
At the time, Rep. Kim Ki-ryong said, "Anti-imperialist sentiment has already taken hold among the public, and there is a strong feeling of aversion to the use of symbols of imperialism.
They also argued for the abolition of the proposed ordinance, saying, "It is deemed excessive to regulate public use of imperialist symbols through an ordinance," and "We will work to improve public relations through education and public relations."
"It would be desirable to seek ways to improve the historical awareness of the people," he said. There were 19 Seoul city council members from the People Power Party who agreed with the abolition proposal.
At the time, when such a controversy arose just one week before the general election, the then head of the People's Power Emergency Response Committee,
Han Dong-hoon, who was in the meeting, said, "This is contrary to the position of the People Power Party, which clearly states in its platform that it inherited the spirit of the March 1st Independence Movement," and "I would like to urge the city council members who proposed the abolition of the relevant ordinance bill to
"Strict action will be taken against them after a party-level investigation," he warned.
