South Korea: Perpetrator appeals 50-year prison sentence after trying to stop sexual assault on girlfriend, resulting in ”11-year intelligence” disorder

A man in his 20s who attempted to sexually assault a woman he had never met before, and then stabbed and killed his girlfriend who tried to stop him, said at an appeal hearing, "I will never forget my mistake, and will live my life with remorse."
On the 18th, the Daegu High Court held the final hearing of the appeal trial of Defendant A (29), who was arrested and indicted on charges of violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes.
The first trial court sentenced Defendant A to 50 years in prison, and the court will decide on the sentencing hearing, including the victim's condition and treatment history, at the trial date.
However, although Defendant A admitted to all the charges in the first trial, he appealed the decision on the grounds that the 50-year prison sentence was too severe.

The doctor found that she had little feeling in her fingertips and was numb. She had no intention of settling out of court. B's boyfriend, C (23), suffered multiple trauma from the stab wound and anoxic brain injury.
C was hospitalized for four months and spent more than 50 million won (US$50,000) on medical expenses alone. At the time of her first treatment, her mental age was that of a five-year-old.
However, it was reported that she now has the cognitive ability of a junior high school student. Ms. C lives her daily life with the help of her mother. In her closing argument, Defendant A said, "I am truly sorry to the victims.
"I am truly sorry not only to the victims, but also to their parents, families, and everyone who cares for them," he said, bowing his head. "I will live my life as a criminal, never forgetting my mistake and reflecting on it," he added.
" Defendant A's sentencing hearing is scheduled to be held around 10 a.m. on the 23rd of next month. Defendant A followed B into a one-room apartment building in Daegu at around 10:56 p.m. on May 14th of last year.
After that, he attempted to slash her wrists with a weapon and sexually assault her, but failed. At the time, Defendant A, who was dressed as a delivery man and searching for a target, happened to spot Ms. B and followed her to her home.
When Defendant A attempted to sexually assault Ms. B, Ms. C entered through the front door to stop him, and the crime was thwarted. However, Defendant A stabbed Ms. C several times in the face, neck, shoulders, etc. with the murder weapon.
B suffered severe nerve damage and an artery cut in his left wrist due to the weapon brandished by Defendant A. C suffered multiple cardiac arrests and other dangerous situations due to excessive bleeding.
He underwent surgery lasting more than 20 hours while enduring various traumatic experiences. However, when Mr. C finally regained consciousness about 40 days later, he was left with permanent disabilities.
