A 40,000-pyeong biodiesel plant in Daesan, Chungcheongnam-do
The fuel plant will produce biofuels from animal and vegetable fats and oils, which not only have similar properties to petroleum fuels but also have a significant effect on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
In South Korea, a 4% biodiesel blend is currently mandatory, but there are plans to raise this to 8% by 2030.
The newly completed biodiesel fuel plant is the first in Korea to use the supercritical process.
In order to protect the environment, the company is cooperating with Lotte Wellfood (formerly Lotte Confectionery). Lotte Wellfood supplies raw materials such as waste cooking oil, which it uses to produce biodiesel fuel and distribute it to Lotte.
The company plans to supply the fuel to trucks used by its group companies. Joo Young-min, CEO of HD Hyundai Oilbank, said, "The completion of the biodiesel fuel plant is aimed at helping to raise the production capacity of aviation and marine fuels.
"This will be a step towards the production of biofuels in China. We will begin to fully transform into a green energy company by exporting biodiesel fuels, etc."
