According to the legal community, on the 21st, the Suwon District Court in South Korea imposed a fine of 100,000 yen on suspect A (32, public servant) who was indicted on suspicion of violating the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling (causing death).
The court awarded a fine of 10,000 won (approximately 1.1 million yen). Suspect A is said to have been arrested at around 8:50 a.m. on August 24 last year along the Seongbok River in Suzy-gu, Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province.
He was indicted on suspicion of colliding with an oncoming victim, Mr. B (67, male), while riding an electric scooter on a bicycle-only road, resulting in Mr. B's death.
At the time, suspect A was riding an electric scooter down a narrow, curved road.
After spotting pedestrian B, suspect A shouted "Please move!", but B was looking at his cell phone and was unable to see suspect A, so he was unable to avoid him.
The impact of the accident caused pedestrian B to collapse and he was taken to the hospital, but he died four days later from traumatic subdural hemorrhage.
The court said, "A serious result occurred, with the victim's death. However, the negligence of suspect A and the negligence of Mr. B were not the same.
"This sentence was decided after taking into consideration the fact that some of the charges were in conflict with one another and that a reasonable amount was agreed upon with the victim's family," the court ruled.
