In response to Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo's accusation of being a ”traitor,” Han Dong-hoon, chairman of the National Power Emergency Response Committee, said, ”I will not betray the people” (South Korea)
When Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo raised the issue of the responsibility of former emergency response committee chairman Han Dong-hoon for the People Power Party's crushing defeat in the April 10 general election, former committee member Han
Han Cho broke his long silence and made his thoughts clear. On the night of the 20th, he wrote on Facebook, "No matter what happens, I will not betray you, the people."
He also emphasized, "The only people politicians should not betray are you, the people. Making an effort to correct mistakes is not betrayal but courage."
This is the first time that Han has publicly expressed his views since he resigned on the 11th, the day after the general election. It is also unusual for him to make his views public through Facebook.
Since assuming his new role as emergency response committee chairman, Han has not posted anything on Facebook. The reason he expressed his views in this way is in response to Mayor Hong's daily attacks.
Mayor Hong recently posted on Facebook and other online communication platforms that he was "playing around with the presidential election by taking selfies" and that "the mistake of former Chairman Han caused the biggest defeat in history."
In particular, the previous day, Mayor Hong criticized Han for "betraying President Yoon Seok-yeol," to which Han responded, "You betrayed me."
The ruling party is also continuing to debate over Mayor Hong's claim that Han Dong-hoon is responsible for the devastating general election defeat.
The argument that the defeat in the general election was due to the 'political novice' former chairman Han was brought up.
On the 21st, lawyer Shin Pyeong wrote on Facebook, "What is the point of personal betrayal when dealing with public matters!
If the president makes a mistake, it is natural to ask for correction, and even if he does something that goes against human integrity, he is still a respectable public official and public figure," he said.
He drew a line at accusing Mayor Hong of being a "traitor." On the other hand, he said, "The biggest reason why the People's Power Party suffered a crushing defeat in the general election is that former Chairman Han had too much confidence in his own abilities.
The chairman ran the election campaign alone, unable to escape from his excessive self-delusion that he was the one who could save the country. Let's stop making excuses."
Meanwhile, within the party, there are voices stating that President Yoon and various negative factors emanating from the presidential office are the root cause of the defeat, and that former Chairman Han will fight bravely to prevent constitutional revision even in such a situation.
Former Seoul lawmaker Kim Young-woo, who lost in the Dongdaemun Gap district, wrote on Facebook on the same day, "Now, it is only after the former chairman Han has been appointed as the chairman of the National Assembly that I can accept his orders."
"There are people who are throwing stones. This is not good. It is really not good. The result is disappointing, but during the general election, no matter what anyone says, former Chairman Han was Hong Gildong," he emphasized.
Former Rep. Kim said, "When ignorant opposition party lawmakers started attacking the Presidential Office and the government, starting with the Cheongdam-dong Bar Ghost Story (Seoul), former Chairman Han and others stood up to them alone.
Who can dare throw a stone at former Chairman Han, who joined a party in a desperate and stagnant state and served as emergency response committee chairman, yet lit the fire that enabled us to hold a general election?"
